Sport horse training has become a lucrative business for capable and competent horse trainers. Training a sport horse is really no child’s play as it involves helping in building a level of trust and a high rapport between the horse and the rider. Horses can be temperamental creatures and while one may break into them with some ease; it is certainly not so easy to train them for complex sporting events. • You could be a teacher in a riding school. You will need to pass the exams that apply in your country before a reputable riding school would employ you but, if you are a knowledgeable and competent horseman/woman, that shouldn’t be too difficult.
• There are lots of opportunities for good farriers. This career choice would mean some extensive training as you would be involved in shoeing and trimming of the horses hooves. Done correctly, this can greatly enhance a horse’s competition ability but if it is not done properly, it could ruin a good horse. Good farriers are very scarce these days, so with the right certification and training, you could make a lot of money.
• If you have some land, you could go into the livery yard business. You could build some good stable blocks and either rent out each stable to horse owners on a DIY basis or you could charge a monthly fee and you take charge of the owners horse and do all the work. The choice you make here depends on the amount of work that you want to do and if you are prepared to have owners coming and going on your premises at all hours.

These are just a few of the career choices that involve horses but there are a lot more. Do a little research to find out what certification or qualifications you would need to pursue the career of your dreams. Another good idea is to speak to someone who is actually doing the job that you are interested in to get a little insider information. Most people are only too happy to offer advice and insight into their particular field of equestrianism.

Horse and training are a profession that have quite a bit of demand in the contemporary world. Clicker Training

The clicker training method for both horses and dogs relies on the reward system. Anyone that has had a horse or looked after one will know the lengths that a horse will go to in order to persuade you to give him a mint from your pocket! He will nudge you, snuffle about around your pocket and follow you round like a lamb if he thinks it will get him a treat.

Confident horses are naturally curious and clicker training will harness this curiosity and tenacity to enable you to teach your horse a few basic tricks. You can begin by teaching him to touch something. You could fix a plastic dish or some other safe object to the wall of the stable or to the fence in the field or even hold it in your hand. Your horse, being a curious creature, will generally come over and have a sniff and a snuffle at the object. The minute he touches the object, say ‘touch’ or whatever at the same time as you click and give him a reward. It could be a slice of carrot or a mint or whatever he loves.

The next step is to show him the treat and hold it right next to the object, he will probably touch the object by accident as he tries to get the treat and the second he does, you should say the word, click and give him a treat. Do this for a couple of minutes twice a day and within two weeks you will be able to say your chosen word, in this case ‘touch’ and he will touch the object in order to get the treat.

Once he has got the idea that a click means a treat, you can move on to tricks like nodding his head, holding one foot off the ground or even knocking your hat off by holding the treat next to the object and clicking and treating as before as he does the required action. You just use the same simple technique as you did with the ‘touch’ trick.

It may take a while before he understands that the click means a treat but if you have regular, short training sessions, he will eventually get the message. As he gets to know that click means treat, don’t reward him instantly every time – leave it for 30 seconds or so or he may become too demanding during the training sessions.

Some horses are easier to teach than others and it does take time and patience to teach your old horse some new tricks. As long as you teach your tricks with kindness and a lot of patience you and your horse can have a lot of fun showing your friends how clever your horse is.

To Geld Or Not To Geld

When horse training there are several things that a young horse needs to be taught to help him become a happy and biddable grown up animal. The first thing to consider if your youngster is a colt is to have him gelded (castrated) as soon as your vet can do it; especially if you are not planning to use him at stud. This will make him safer and easier to handle as he is growing up. An entire (un-castrated) youngster is a nuisance in the field and can be way too boisterous for an inexperienced owner to handle; not to mention the fact that any mare in season will be receiving a lot of unwanted attention from him! After he has been gelded, he will be a much more docile animal making him easier to work with.

Stable Manners

If you have the facilities, you should bring your youngster into the stable each day so you can train him in some basic stable manners. If he was not handled as a foal it will take a little time and patience to train him how to stand still whilst being groomed. It will also be essential to teach him how to have his feet picked up in order for the farrier to trim his feet. In a perfect world, a farrier should have been trimming his feet since he was a few months old to help his feet grow into the correct shape.

Your young horse will also need to be trained to stand quietly whilst he is tied up (obviously you would use a quick release knot). He should also be trained not to push you around and treat you with respect. The earlier you begin to train a young horse some basic manners, the easier it will be for both of you to enjoy your time together.

The Bit Between His Teeth

At around 18 months old, it is a good idea to train him to get comfortable with having a bit in his mouth. This initial training with a bit will provide the foundation for a horse to accept the bit when he is being ridden. A horse which has no resistance to the bit when being ridden is easier to control. To introduce a bit to a young horse, you should first fit a bridle without the bit to make sure the whole thing will fit him comfortably when you begin to introduce him to the bit. I don’t usually use a brow band or a nose band for this exercise so the bridle easier to put on.

You should have either bought or borrowed a ‘mouthing’ bit. This is a regular bit with ‘keys’ attached that gives your young horse something to play with whilst it is in his mouth. Then attach one side of the bit to the bridle and fir the bridle without putting the bit in his mouth. Put a bit of molasses or treacle on the bit and put it gently into his mouth. If he has clamped his mouth shut, put your fingers into the part of his mouth where there are no teeth and push your thumb onto the roof of his mouth, then slip the bit into place and attach it to the bridle at the other side. Leave him with the bit in for about 15 minutes to begin with and gradually increase the time. After he seems comfortable with the bit in his mouth, progress to leading him around the yard with a curb chain and rope attached to the bit.

Doing these exercises at a young age will make for an easier transition to becoming a ridden horse.

Horse Training Tip -1

Firstly, I must say this up front in order to clear up any doubt, you will come across many techniques for training horses; some of these techniques are good and some are better, it all comes down to how the technique is applied and the temperament of the horse being trained. You need to learn a variety of techniques if you’re going to be successful at horse training. Your primary goal should be to study, as much as you can, how to integrate different training methods alongside your own personal preferences and skills so that you can draw of many facets of training the horse and give you some solid knowledge so that you are not wasting precious time attempting to do something you may not yet have sufficient experience to carry out successfully.

Horse Training Tip -2

Make every effort to establish a bond with your horse. Many techniques exists that are, in my opinion, cold and calculated, and breeders far and wide swear by these methods. I’m sure they do work, otherwise no one would be using them. However, I strongly believe that it is far more enjoyable to use a training technique that produces a bond between you and your horse, that way you’ll build up trust and, believe it or not, lifelong friendly relationship.

An important lesson for anyone to learn is “you can not fool a horse”, period!. Horses are naturally shy of people but once you have built trust it will obey your every command, but it will not respond if it thinks your actions as threatening in any way. Horses are great at reading body language

First, there is something you need to know about this guide. It is not new. In fact, it is over 100 years old. See, it was actually written by Professor Jesse Beery who was probably the greatest horse trainer in history. His skill with horses is legendary. So you’re probably wondering how such an old manuscript has come to the light of day now. Well, I don’t have the answer to that, but the person who put this book together,  Charlie Hicks, should be given an award just for finding this information. If you don’t know about Jesse Beery, go to your library and do some research on him.

As for the book itself, it literally has everything in it that any horse trainer, no matter what level of experience, will need to train his or her horse. The table of contents is mind boggling, covering everything from Jesse Beery’s three fundamental theories to cures for just about every illness and problem that a horse can encounter. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING has been left out. That is why this book is literally impossible to review.

The good news is, I don’t have to. If you go to Charlie’s site, he has posted on it, the entire table of contents of every little thing contained in this book. It will take you a while just to go through it. The first 30 chapters will be about the best reading on horse training you’ve ever read…all in Jesse Beery’s original words. Nothing has been changed or altered in any way.
